The Myth of Malham 2023 Offshore Race

It was an exciting weekend of Offshore racing for Hamble Point Yacht Charters with several of the fleet chartered for racing and some of the team also partaking in the event.

The Myth of Malham took place on Saturday 27th May in Cowes and the Solent, with racing typically lasting between 24- 60 hours depending on weather conditions. With a record number of entries this year (being a qualifier for the Fastnet), the race is part of the 2023 RORC Series.

Organised by the RORC, the race starts at the Royal Yacht Squadron start line on the Isle of Wight, rounds the Eddystone Lighthouse to port, then back to the North buoy off Hurst for the finish with a distance of 230 nautical miles.

A favourite offshore race for many, this year saw some challenging conditions for the fleet. With a downwind start and a forecast of anywhere between 2-20 knots the fleet then had to contend with galeforce winds of up to 30 knots with a fairly challenging sea state coming home.

Hamble Point Yacht Charters had Gaelforce (Beneteau 40.7), Nota Bene (Oceanis Clipper 473), Abraxas (Beneteau 40.7) and Petruchio (Beneteau 40.7) on charter & Black Sheep (Sunfast 3600) who is a member of our owner services programme where we take care of the season maintenance for the owner.

Race Results:

IRC Category 1

Black Sheep 14th position

IRC Category 2

Petruchio 28th position,

Abraxas 34th position

Gaelforce 38th position.

Nota Bene retired from the race due to time constraints. View the full list of race positions here.

We had staff members competing,  Steph Banham was racing with FIN First Sfida and came in 19th position in the IRC 1.. Steph Watts and Andy Nock, crew of Boracic Sailing,  sadly didn’t make the start line due to engine trouble.  Catie Rota sailed with Black Sheep who finished in 14th position in the IRC 2.  A great effort from all the crews and the RORC for providing another memorable Myth of Malham.
