For a lot of people, the biggest barrier to booking a yacht charter isn’t experience… it’s confidence.
We often speak to sailors who assume they’re “not quite ready yet” - that they need more miles, more qualifications, or more time before they take charge of a boat themselves.
But in reality?
You might already be there.
A good benchmark for bareboat charter is Day Skipper level.
That doesn’t mean you need the certificate in your hand, but it does mean you should feel comfortable with:
• Handling a yacht in local conditions
• Basic navigation and passage planning
• Berthing and close-quarters manoeuvring
• Making sensible decisions based on weather and tides
If you’ve built up similar experience over time, that often counts just as much.
If you’re unsure where you sit, it’s always worth having a look at the type of boats available and what feels manageable

One of the biggest misconceptions is that you need to be completely self-sufficient before you step onboard. You don’t.
When you arrive, we’ll talk you through:
• The boat and how everything works
• The conditions for your trip
• Suggested routes and itineraries
• Anything you’re unsure about
It’s a calm, practical handover, and you’ll have the chance to ask as many questions as you like before heading out.
If you’d prefer a bit of support to start with, you can always add a skipper.

There’s a noticeable shift that happens once you leave the marina.
What feels like a big step beforehand quickly becomes natural once you’re out there.
You settle in.
You get into a rhythm.
And the confidence builds far faster than most people expect.
It’s not about being perfect, it’s about being capable, aware, and comfortable making decisions.
This isn’t an exam environment.
It’s your time on the water.
A chance to sail at your own pace, explore the Solent, and enjoy everything that comes with it, whether that’s a relaxed day sail, lunch at anchor, or a longer weekend away.
And if you’re flexible on timing, it’s always worth checking what’s currently available

If you’re close but not quite there yet, there are easy ways to bridge the gap:
• Add a skipper for the first day
• Bring along a more experienced friend
• Start with a shorter, local trip
Or even build confidence with a bit more time on the water first.

You don’t have to go all-in straight away.
Most people don’t feel “100% ready” before their first charter.
But if you’ve got the foundations in place, the rest tends to fall into place once you’re out there.
And that first trip?
It’s usually the one that changes everything.

No fuss or hassle; it was all about going sailing!
This was our first time sailing from Hamble, and it's a great location to get quickly into the Solent. Definitely will be back once the weather warms up and the days get longer to try some longer trips. Thank you, Hamble Point Yacht Charters for a great weekend.
