For a lot of people, the biggest barrier to booking a yacht charter isn’t experience… it’s confidence.
We often speak to sailors who assume they’re “not quite ready yet” - that they need more miles, more qualifications, or more time before they take charge of a boat themselves.
But in reality?
You might already be there.
A good benchmark for bareboat charter is Day Skipper level.
That doesn’t mean you need the certificate in your hand, but it does mean you should feel comfortable with:
• Handling a yacht in local conditions
• Basic navigation and passage planning
• Berthing and close-quarters manoeuvring
• Making sensible decisions based on weather and tides
If you’ve built up similar experience over time, that often counts just as much.
If you’re unsure where you sit, it’s always worth having a look at the type of boats available and what feels manageable

One of the biggest misconceptions is that you need to be completely self-sufficient before you step onboard. You don’t.
When you arrive, we’ll talk you through:
• The boat and how everything works
• The conditions for your trip
• Suggested routes and itineraries
• Anything you’re unsure about
It’s a calm, practical handover, and you’ll have the chance to ask as many questions as you like before heading out.
If you’d prefer a bit of support to start with, you can always add a skipper.

There’s a noticeable shift that happens once you leave the marina.
What feels like a big step beforehand quickly becomes natural once you’re out there.
You settle in.
You get into a rhythm.
And the confidence builds far faster than most people expect.
It’s not about being perfect, it’s about being capable, aware, and comfortable making decisions.
This isn’t an exam environment.
It’s your time on the water.
A chance to sail at your own pace, explore the Solent, and enjoy everything that comes with it, whether that’s a relaxed day sail, lunch at anchor, or a longer weekend away.
And if you’re flexible on timing, it’s always worth checking what’s currently available

If you’re close but not quite there yet, there are easy ways to bridge the gap:
• Add a skipper for the first day
• Bring along a more experienced friend
• Start with a shorter, local trip
Or even build confidence with a bit more time on the water first.

You don’t have to go all-in straight away.
Most people don’t feel “100% ready” before their first charter.
But if you’ve got the foundations in place, the rest tends to fall into place once you’re out there.
And that first trip?
It’s usually the one that changes everything.

A great partner and I have used them 10+ times
Helpful team. Well looked after yacht. Good advice
A quick note as I really enjoyed captaining Spirit, we all had a great weekend on board, everything about the boat was fine, thank you
I was very impressed with the quality and spec of the boat. Considering her age and use she was in fantastic condition and sailed very well. Would definitely consider returning.
Good yacht, straightforward charter!
Very friendly and ameniable charter company who are big enough to manage but still small enough to care. A great weekend, excellent foul weather gear and geanerally good all round
We've chartered twice with Hamble Point and just booked our third trip. It's a great service, from booking onwards. All the staff we've met or spoken to have been helpful and friendly, and the boats have been left clean and in really good condition each time. The company has been very accommodating when we've requested to change our dates due to the weather or illness, and they've been flexible about the pick-up too - really handy when you're coming down from London after work.
Professional and very helpful

Thank you for letting us play on Spirit. We were all very impressed both with the way she sailed and the level of comfort. I suspect we will take her again,. if we may.
Once again HPYC provided an excelllent boat. Their yachts are always well-presented and well-equipped. We sailed Spirit, a lovely boat with a good turn of speed yet easy to handle. As with all German yachts I have sailed, the build quality is to a very high standard providing comfortable accommodation.
Very customer orientated, competent and helpful team, great place to start a sailing trip.
Excellant, reliable and client friendly company!
