For a lot of people, the biggest barrier to booking a yacht charter isn’t experience… it’s confidence.
We often speak to sailors who assume they’re “not quite ready yet” - that they need more miles, more qualifications, or more time before they take charge of a boat themselves.
But in reality?
You might already be there.
A good benchmark for bareboat charter is Day Skipper level.
That doesn’t mean you need the certificate in your hand, but it does mean you should feel comfortable with:
• Handling a yacht in local conditions
• Basic navigation and passage planning
• Berthing and close-quarters manoeuvring
• Making sensible decisions based on weather and tides
If you’ve built up similar experience over time, that often counts just as much.
If you’re unsure where you sit, it’s always worth having a look at the type of boats available and what feels manageable

One of the biggest misconceptions is that you need to be completely self-sufficient before you step onboard. You don’t.
When you arrive, we’ll talk you through:
• The boat and how everything works
• The conditions for your trip
• Suggested routes and itineraries
• Anything you’re unsure about
It’s a calm, practical handover, and you’ll have the chance to ask as many questions as you like before heading out.
If you’d prefer a bit of support to start with, you can always add a skipper.

There’s a noticeable shift that happens once you leave the marina.
What feels like a big step beforehand quickly becomes natural once you’re out there.
You settle in.
You get into a rhythm.
And the confidence builds far faster than most people expect.
It’s not about being perfect, it’s about being capable, aware, and comfortable making decisions.
This isn’t an exam environment.
It’s your time on the water.
A chance to sail at your own pace, explore the Solent, and enjoy everything that comes with it, whether that’s a relaxed day sail, lunch at anchor, or a longer weekend away.
And if you’re flexible on timing, it’s always worth checking what’s currently available

If you’re close but not quite there yet, there are easy ways to bridge the gap:
• Add a skipper for the first day
• Bring along a more experienced friend
• Start with a shorter, local trip
Or even build confidence with a bit more time on the water first.

You don’t have to go all-in straight away.
Most people don’t feel “100% ready” before their first charter.
But if you’ve got the foundations in place, the rest tends to fall into place once you’re out there.
And that first trip?
It’s usually the one that changes everything.

Had another amazing week sailing thanks to HPYC. The team here are so friendly; Alex, Josh and Dave are a really credit to the business - nothing seems to much trouble and we shall definitely be visiting again next year. Here’s to hoping we have another mid 20’s heatwave.....please.
When asked what do HPYC do really well... 'Presentation and quality of yachts on offer together with friendly and helpful staff, willing to be flexible and to accommodate client's wishes.
Thank you for the sailing yesterday. Had a great day, the wind was a little light at first but it picked up a bit more in the afternoon. Big shout out to the skipper, Josh , thought he was amazing. Really knowledgable and patient. Made the day funny and educational.

We chartered a boat with Karen, at very ,very short notice after a previous company informed us that they had doubled booked and were cancelling us. Karen was amazing & did everything that she could to get us booked in and keeping us informed all the way. Well what a blessing the cancellation turned out to be. Our skipper Josh was open ,friendly, informative and fun! The weather was extremely hot and he had 7 (well behaved)women to contend with. The trip was for my little sisters hen day, as we all love a boat trip this was a 'must' Continue Reading
We were let down extremely last minute by a chartering company for a hen do. With just 3 days till the big day I started getting a little panicked! I had no need to! I spoke to Karen in the office who was extremely helpful! She went away to see what she could do, not only did she come back with a skipper and a boat, she was also able to provide everything and more, that we were due to have on the original booking. She also beat the price! We went out on the southern comfort with josh who Continue Reading
We chartered 2 boats which were both fantastic - skippers were relaxed and friendly and encouraged some of the more inexperienced among our group to have a go on helm, which resulted in a fantastic and participative day for all on board. We were blessed with perfect conditions for sailing, a truly amazing day on the water.
Dealing with Hamble Point Yacht Charters has been a great experience. The whole team are very professional. We took 2 boats out onto the Solent with 24 clients to experience a day’s sailing. They had an exhilarating time and thoroughly enjoyed themselves. The offices are conveniently located with ample parking. They are also situated very close to a restaurant who provide excellent crew meeting facilities with great tea, coffee and bacon rolls – I will be using Hamble Point Charters again
Thank you for a fantastic sailing experience. We all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. We were lucky that the weather was spectacular.
Interpersonal & sailing skills of skipper, David. Catering. Ease of booking were all great!
Great training weekend where I could practice skills I learnt on my Day Skipper 3 years ago, but had not really practised since e.g. MOB under power & under sail, picking up a buoy under sail and mooring in various spaces and marinas. The instructor (John) was absolutely excellent. He was really knowledgeable and experienced and gave really clear explanations, both by drawing diagrams, demonstrations and talking us through what we were about to do. There was plenty of space on-board the yacht (38ft Bavaria) for three of us in total. Supplied food was fine and there was plenty of Continue Reading
They are a professional company, my dealings with the office were very straightforward and they responded promptly to all my calls and e-mails. They had some last minute issues with the intended yacht, but they were able to arrange for a suitable replacement and everything was in good order when we arrived. The yacht itself was in excellent condition and sailed brilliantly.
Good service and boats in good condition
Amazing course. This company managed to put together a bespoke set of training for us with an extremely capable and experienced skipper together with an excellent boat. The location enabled us to experience so much over the time on the course.
Hamble Point Yacht Chater were very efficient and friendly when booking and equally so when reviewing and handing back the yacht. Everything was in good order which made for a fantastic few days on the Solent. I would definitely return.
