There's a reason sailors return to the Solent year after year.

From peaceful rivers and picturesque harbours to dramatic chalk cliffs and bustling waterfront towns, the Solent offers one of the UK's finest cruising grounds. Whether you're planning a relaxing day sail, a weekend escape, or a week-long sailing holiday, there's always somewhere new to discover.

At Hamble Point Yacht Charters, we've been helping people explore these waters since 1993. With over 30 years of local knowledge, we've learnt that no two sailing trips are ever quite the same - but there are a handful of destinations we find ourselves recommending time and time again.

Whether you're looking for a bareboat yacht charter, a relaxing skippered sailing experience or you'd like to build your confidence with one of our RYA sailing courses, these five destinations showcase everything that makes sailing in the Solent so special.

1. Cowes - The Sailing Capital of The Solent

If there's one destination that sums up everything great about sailing the Solent, it's Cowes.

Located on the northern coast of the Isle of Wight, Cowes is famous for its maritime heritage, lively waterfront and world-renowned sailing events, including Cowes Week. Wander through the independent shops, enjoy lunch overlooking the marina, or simply relax with a drink while watching the constant stream of yachts passing by.

For many of our guests enjoying a bareboat yacht charter, Cowes is the perfect first stop. It's an easy sail from Hamble Point Marina and offers excellent marina facilities, making it ideal for lunch, dinner or an overnight stay.

Local Tip: If you're planning to stay overnight during the summer or Cowes Week, book your berth in advance - marinas fill quickly.

2. Beaulieu River - A Peaceful Escape

Sometimes the best days on the water are the quietest ones.

Just a short sail from Hamble, the Beaulieu River offers a completely different side of the Solent. As you cruise upriver, busy sailing waters give way to ancient woodland, peaceful moorings and an abundance of wildlife.

Stop at the historic village of Buckler's Hard, once famous for building Royal Navy ships, before spending the evening enjoying one of the Solent's most tranquil anchorages.

Guests choosing one of our skippered yacht charters often tell us this is one of the highlights of their trip.

3. Lymington - Coastal Charm and Great Food

Lymington has long been a favourite destination for Solent sailors, combining the charm of a traditional market town with excellent sailing facilities.

Its colourful quay is lined with independent boutiques, cafés, restaurants and pubs, making it the perfect place to stretch your legs after a morning on the water.

If you're planning a long weekend, many guests choose one of the yachts from our charter fleet specifically to include Lymington as an overnight stop before exploring the western Solent.

Local Tip: The town centre is only a few minutes' walk from the marina, making it an easy place to stock up before continuing your voyage.

4. Portsmouth Harbour -  A Journey Through Maritime History

Few harbour entrances are as memorable as Portsmouth.

Passing beneath the iconic Spinnaker Tower before entering one of Britain's busiest naval harbours is an experience every sailor should enjoy at least once.

Once ashore you'll find the Historic Dockyard, HMS Victory, the Mary Rose Museum, Gunwharf Quays, cafés, bars and some of the best waterfront dining on the South Coast.

If you're new to sailing or simply want to relax, one of our skippered sailing experiences allows you to enjoy the journey while your skipper takes care of the navigation.

Why you'll love it

Local Tip: Commercial shipping and naval vessels always have priority, so keep a careful lookout when entering and leaving the harbour.

5. Freshwater Bay - One of the Solent's Most Spectacular Anchorages

If someone asked us where we'd spend a warm summer afternoon at anchor, Freshwater Bay would be right at the top of our list.

Its towering white chalk cliffs, crystal-clear water, and breathtaking views towards The Needles create one of the most spectacular backdrops anywhere on the South Coast.

On calm days, it's the perfect place to enjoy lunch onboard, go for a swim, or simply switch off and appreciate everything that makes sailing so special.

Why you'll love it

✔ Dramatic chalk cliffs

✔ Crystal-clear water
